Following surgery, both babies arrived back in the room with a wound vac over their bellies. While the plastic surgeons were changing out Emmett's sponge a few days later, they noticed that there was bile collecting in his abdominal cavity. In addition, his wound vac was collecting substantially more secretions than Owen's wound vac, which indicated a problem. On Friday after surgery, they decided to take Emmett to the OR to find the leak, fix it, and then place a contraption that would expand his skin externally. In addition, they placed a drain as a fail safe, in case he sprung another leak in his little biliary system.
On Monday, there was concern that there may be ANOTHER bile leak, so Emmett once again made a trip to the OR for a systems check, and to look for the leaky 'pipe,' but nothing was found. They replaced the external skin expanders with a fresh one, and he came back with another drain. Both drains have remained clear with no bile coming out of them.
Thursday, both babies made a trip to the OR. Emmett's skin expanders were removed, and his opening is about an inch in diameter! He came back with only a wound vac, and he looks incredible. Owen went to the OR after his brother and had an external skin expander placed with a wound vac on top. To do this, he has been placed under heavy sedation, so he is able to heal and relax. They both look amazing. In a few days, Owen's skin expander will be removed, and he will have an opening approximately an inch in diameter, give or take a few centimeters.
In other news, (this is so exciting!) I got to hold Owen for the first time!! in my arms! in a chair! I couldn't see him for the first 10 minutes because I was too busy crying, but once i COULD see, I watched him sleep peacefully the whole time. For an hour! I reluctantly allowed the nurses to nestle him back into his bed before shift change. But soon, I will get to hold Emmett. And after that, I will hopefully get to hold them both. A lot. And this momma can hardly wait!!
One last thing. As a fund-raiser, one of my new friends (Elizabeth) has had a t-shirt designed for our babies. Sizes, cost, and additional information will be posted in the near future. So if you are interested, please check back! I will even give you a sneak peek of the design.
