I can put the dreaming on hold and start initiating the next steps for my babies!
Monday, the neo-natologist and surgeons agreed that taking Emmett and Owen off the paralytic was the next step. Monday evening, Dave was at the hospital and was able to see Owen begin to move a little, and then open his eyes! Emmett was moving, and by the time I saw them both on Tuesday, both of them were moving a little and opening their eyes!! I was/am so happy to see their little eyes!
They are both still sedated, but Owen seems to be awake and looking around more often than not. Emmett tends to sleep just a little bit more.
They both have a wound vac over their bellies for now, and the wound vac is replaced every other day. I spoke with one of the plastic surgeons about the next steps and found out that the very general plan from their standpoint will be a 2-step process:
1) When the boys are 2-4 years old, they will put skin expanders in place
2) Once there is enough new skin, they will pull the abdominal muscles (which both boys have) and the new skin to midline. instead of having a circular scar, they will have a long straight scar on their abdomen.
The surgeon said step 3 is optional, but if we want belly buttons, they can make one for each boy.
As far as the rest of the future steps, I know healing, breathing independently of machines, and feeding are on the horizon, but I am not sure what the individual steps will be, and I'm not sure how long it will take. I'm hoping we will get to take them home by Christmas, but that might be wishful thinking.
The next steps for Ethan, Liam, Dave and me at home are...well, we have two more boys to get ready for!!! I am so ready for them to be home until I look around the apartment and realize I am so NOT ready for them to be home!! I feel like a pregnant momma who hasn't started getting ready for the arrival of her baby!! And let me tell you, it is a good feeling!
Dave and I both had a 'slap the forehead' moment when we realized we needed to trade in his truck very soon for a mini-van. And we've got to get car seats, and a stroller, And cribs, and bouncy seats, and maybe a swing, and the list could go on! All of these things were distant dreams, but we are in the next step. It's a reality now!
